The short version
Synapse analyses selected photos, videos, conversation text and questionnaire responses on your device. It does not upload this content for analysis and has no Synapse account or cloud inbox. You choose what to save and what to share through other apps.
On-device analysis does not mean the app never uses the internet. Optional model downloads, Google Play purchases and Google's ML Kit diagnostic data involve network services, described below. Opening an invitation website or sending something through another app also involves those services.
What the app accesses
The camera is used for a scan you start. Android's picker gives access to media you select, including conversation screenshots. Conversation text is entered or pasted by you. Synapse does not request contacts, location, microphone, SMS, call logs or advertising-identifier access. It does not read your messaging apps.
Photos, videos and temporary files
Face and body measurements are calculated locally. Guided recordings and small replay frames can be written to the app's private temporary cache for replay and closer measurement. Temporary capture files are cleared on a new session or app startup; clearing app storage or uninstalling also removes them. Selecting an existing photo or video does not delete the original from your gallery.
A bounded photo preview may remain in memory for sharing during the session. A photo card is stored with an invitation only when you choose that option. The optional language model is not shown photographs, video frames or faces in this release.
Saved results and settings
Results are saved when you choose Save moment or enable Keep a history. Saved content may include entered names, dates, scores, measured-signal summaries, broad questionnaire topic summaries, and thoughts or activity notes you choose to keep. Cropped face thumbnails require the photo-storage option. Saved records use the app's private storage.
Turning off automatic history or photo storage affects future saving; use the deletion controls to remove existing records. Synapse also stores preferences, separate completed-scan and conversation counters, and a cached yes/no purchase entitlement. Trial counts are local to the installation and can reset when app data is cleared or the app is reinstalled. Google Play purchase restoration is separate from those counters.
App backups are disabled and invitation records are excluded from backup. Synapse does not provide cloud recovery or cross-device synchronisation. Uninstalling removes its local files, including saved results, pending invitations and any downloaded model; it cannot remove copies you exported or sent elsewhere, your original gallery media, or Google Play's purchase record.
Conversations and optional on-device questions
Conversation text and screenshot recognition are processed on your device. Text recognition uses Google's bundled ML Kit SDK. Its diagnostic metadata is described below; the screenshot and recognised text are not uploaded for analysis. Conversation input is not included in saved scan history or result share cards.
If you install the optional language model, it can process conversation text you submit or a limited summary of measured signals or questionnaire topics to suggest questions. It is not given individual quiz answers and cannot change your measured score. Generated wording can be mistaken and is not a finding about anyone's feelings. The approximately 2.5 GB model is downloaded from Hugging Face, checked against a known SHA-256 hash and run locally. Google Play delivers its optional runtime module. Removing the model does not delete saved scan results.
Same-device questions
The two people answer separately, with a handover screen. Raw answers are held in memory for the comparison and discarded afterward; they are not saved in history, sent to the model or printed on share cards. Unfinished answers are not recovered after the app process ends.
Current results show broad topic summaries across groups of questions, not individual answers or exact differences. Skipping a question leaves its topic unclassified. Broad summaries can still reveal information when combined with prior knowledge or repeated comparisons. Older saved results retain their original scoring and are identified as legacy results.
Invitations and protected replies
Invitations are exchanged through the messaging or sharing app you choose, without a Synapse messaging server. The inviting device stores pending answers encrypted in private, backup-excluded storage. The other person's reply is encrypted for that invitation; comparison happens on the inviting device, and neither person's individual answers are displayed.
These protections do not verify someone's identity and cannot protect against a modified app or compromised device. Pending answers are removed after comparison or deletion. Invitations close after 30 days; expired pending answers are removed when the invitation screen checks them. Saved summaries and optional photo cards remain until the invitation is deleted.
The invitation webpage on GitHub Pages opens the link locally and has no added analytics. Invitation or encrypted-reply data is carried after the # character, which is not sent in the HTTP request to the website. GitHub can receive ordinary request metadata such as IP address. Your chosen messaging service receives the link and any attached card. You must return to the invitation after installing the app; installation does not automatically import it.
Sharing and feedback
The result-card preview lets you choose whether to include names, selected face photos and a visual index; these options default off. Individual quiz answers, topic differences, private notes, conversation excerpts and generated questions are excluded from that result card. Invitation cards have their own preview and may include the photo you selected or broad shared topic summaries.
Share files are created in temporary app cache and passed to Android's share sheet with access to the chosen file. Old export files are cleaned when another export is prepared. Synapse does not automatically publish them or save result cards to your gallery. A receiving app can retain and distribute what you send; deleting it from Synapse cannot delete those copies.
Feedback opens a draft in your email app or lets you copy it. It includes the message you enter and the technical details displayed on the feedback screen, such as app version, device model and completed-result count. You decide whether to send it. Email you send reaches Handsome Git Lab and your email provider; avoid adding private conversations or photos unless you intend to share them.
Google Play and SDK network data
Opening purchase controls connects to Google Play to obtain the price and check ownership under the account signed in on the device. Once billing is active, returning to the app can refresh ownership. Google handles payment and purchase records; Synapse does not receive your payment-card details. A network failure preserves cached paid access; a successful ownership check can remove it after revocation.
Model downloads expose ordinary connection metadata, including IP address, to Google Play, Hugging Face and their delivery services. They do not include analysed photos, conversations, answers or scores.
Google's bundled ML Kit SDK collects diagnostic and usage metadata: device and app information, a per-installation identifier, performance, API configuration, input/output sizes, feature versions, events and error codes. This does not include your screenshot or recognised text. Google's disclosure states this metadata is encrypted in transit and is not transferred to third parties. See Google's Android data disclosure and ML Kit terms and privacy information. Synapse has no advertising SDK or developer-operated analytics/crash-reporting service.
Results and audience
Synapse is entertainment. Visible cues and questionnaire similarities cannot establish feelings, intentions, honesty or relationship outcomes. It does not use facial measurements to identify people across readings. The current store audience is adults; the app is not directed at children and does not ask for birth dates. Its wording and activities exclude sexual content.
Your choices and contact
You can decline camera access and model installation, choose what to save, delete saved results and invitations, and choose whether to share or send feedback. There is no Synapse account to delete. Uninstalling removes local app content; externally shared copies and third-party purchase or diagnostic records are governed by the relevant services.
